In Circular Letter No. 576, the ISU informed about the cancellation of the scheduled regional qualifying event for the Asian Members, and about the criteria and procedures set up to distribute the total entry quotas (7 Ladies and 5 Men) between the Members concerned. A pre-allotment of 5 start positions for Ladies and 4 start positions for Men was announced, and it was declared that the remaining start positions (2 for Ladies and 1 for Men) would be allotted considering also the results from the Essent ISU World Cup Competition in Heerenveen, January 11-13, 2002 and from the Olympic Winter Games (1500 meters for Ladies and Men, 3000 meters for Ladies and 5000 meters for Men).
After the conclusion of the above competitions, the ISU has determined the following entry quotas for Asian Members for the 2002 World Speed Skating Championships:
