| The 49th ISU Ordinary Congress: Day 4 |
Revised Judging System for Figure Skating
After extensive deliberation on day 4 of the 49th ISU Ordinary Congress the Figure Skating Section voted to adopt a revised system for selecting the panel of Judges at ISU Championships. It will take effect from season 2002/3 until such time as a new system currently under development is implemented (see below).
Each country with a skater in any discipline (Men's Figure Skating, Ladies' Figure Skating, Pairs Figure Skating, Ice Dancing) will have the right to enter a Judge for that specific discipline. Immediately before every segment of each discipline at the Championship 14 Judges will be chosen at random. 9 of these 14 Judges will be anonymously selected by computer. It is the marks of the 9 Judges that will be used to form the result of each skater in that segment. The existing marking system will remain.
Development of New Judging System to Continue
Previously on 3 June the Congress accepted a proposal for a team of experts to continue work on a project to develop a completely new Judging System, based on the basic criteria out-lined in the ISU Press Release of 28 May 2002 (entitled "ISU Proposal for a New Judging System"). This new system may be tested at international events.
Reduction to One Compulsory Dance in major Ice Dancing Competitions
Ice Dancing competitions at ISU Championships (except Junior Championships) and the Olympic Winter Games will subsequently include only one Compulsory Dance instead of two (Rule 520). The Original and Free Dance remain.
Video Replay to be available in Short Track
The Speed Skating Section decided that from now on Referees in Short Track Speed Skating will be permitted to consult relevant video evidence in the case of a protest, provided that a suitable video system/procedure is readily available (Rule 123).
