Communication No. 1148: Figure Skating

1. ISU Judges Special Topic Seminars 2002

The ISU wishes to inform Members that the following Sponsored Special Topic Judges Seminars will be organized.

a) Presentation Mark and Interpretive Free Skating Program Seminar

Beijing, China August 2 - 4, 2002

The aim of this seminar is to educate Judges in depth, on how to correctly evaluate the Presentation Mark and the Interpretive Free Skating Program. Emphasis will also be placed at this seminar on how to judge the technical format used in the Open International Competitions, which in part comprises of the Interpretive Free Skating program.

This seminar is primarily for Judges and Referees from the following ISU Members:

AUS, CHN, TPE, PRK, HKG, JPN, KZK, MGL, NZL, KOR, RSA, THA, UZB.

These Members are invited to send in the names of up to four (4) ISU Championship/ International Competition Judges and/or National Judges who in the view of their respective Member, already possess a good knowledge of the Presentation Mark, or have the potential to develop their understanding, and therefore also have the ability to learn and understand the concept of the Interpretive Free Skating Program. These Judges should also have a very good knowledge of the English language. In the case of National Judges these must be perspective International Competition Judges in the near future.

However Judges and Referees from other Members can apply and may send in the names of one (1) ISU Championship or International Competition Judge, whose name will be accepted if places are available. Members whose Judge/s do not display a very good knowledge of English, in the opinion of the Figure Skating Technical Committee, shall reimburse the ISU for the living expenses (room and meals) and travel costs where paid by the ISU.

This Judges seminar is run in conjunction with a Coaches/Skaters ISU Development project.

b) Pair Skating Seminar

Paris, France, November 14 - 17, 2002

In conjunction with the Trophée Lalique

This seminar is primarily for the Judges and Referees from Europe. European Members can send in the names of up to three (3) ISU Championship or International Competition Judges. However Judges and Referees from other Members can apply and may send in the names of up to two (2) ISU Championship or International Competition Judges. A Member whose Judge does not display a working knowledge of English, in the opinion of the Figure Skating Technical Committee, shall reimburse the ISU for the living expenses (room and meals) and travel costs when paid by the ISU.

c) Referee Seminar

Copenhagen, Denmark October 4th - 6th 2002

Members are invited to send in the names of up to three (3) ISU Championship or International Competition Referees, who in the view of their respective Member possess the necessary personal and technical abilities plus the potential to be highly effective and respected Referees. Also, these individuals must have a very good knowledge of the English language.

As the total number of participants is restricted, the Figure Skating Technical Committee will make the final selection from the applications submitted by the Members.

The Figure Skating Technical Committee reserves the rights to include in the final list Referee/s whose name/s have not been forwarded, but in the view of the Committee, have the relevant qualities to be a highly effective and respected Referee.

Expenses

The responsibility for the three (3) Seminars (1a, 1b and 1c above) is as follows:

  1. The living expenses (room and meals) will be borne by the ISU for the period from lunchtime on

  2. Travel expenses of up to a maximum contribution of 50% of an Apex or Super Apex air ticket (whichever is less expensive) will be borne by the ISU.

    Applications for the above mentioned Seminars a), b) and c) must be received at least 8 weeks prior to the start of the respective Seminar, and Members will be notified of their Referees/Judges participation approximately 6 weeks prior to the commencement of the seminar. As the total number of participants is restricted at all three (3) Seminars, the Figure Skating Technical Committee will make the final selections from the applications submitted.

3. New Judges Educational Video " Basic Judging Skills" (How to Judge)

The Figure Skating Technical Committee is pleased to announce that a new educational Judges video has been produced. This video is for National Judges who are commencing their judging careers. Included in this video is a competition for the Judges to trial judge, the skaters that are demonstrating and competing are of pre Junior level both in age and ability. The intent of this new video is to try to educate new national Judges to understand what constitues good basic skating at an early stage in the skater's career and how they should assess varying standards.

This video is obtainable from the ISU Secretariat in Lausanne for SFr 40.-
